World AIDS Day
Thanks, everyone for all of your efforts with today’s Teach-In on HIV/AIDS in Africa. Below are some links that may be of interest.
- Promising results of a pre-exposure prophylaxis study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed taking a combination drug (antiretroviral, typically used for those already infected) would decrease the chance that men and transgender women who have sex with men would become infected with HIV. (Karen Grepin agrees this is good news, but says it’s no magic bullet.)
- The UNAIDS 2010 Global Report is out. New infections are declining (including among children), AIDS-related deaths are declining, but UNAIDS says, “the gains are real but still fragile.” Check here for a quick, critical appraisal of the report.
- The Pope isn’t anti-condom anymore. He even talked about transgenders!
- Celebrities pretend to die to raise money for AIDS in Africa. Alicia Keys, I used to love your music, but really? (Texas In Africa gives us bullet points on why this can easily be labeled Badvocacy)
- And finally, some things you can do, small or big, that can have an impact on AIDS.
